Windows 2008 Snapshot Snafu.
Dec 2nd
I have seen this happen a few times and i really hate how the checkpoint / snapshot feature works in Hyper-V. Basically it creates an “.avhd” file for each snapshot you create and using an “.xml” file keeps track of how they are stitched together. I had a customer that had a disk failure. and after rebuilding the host, i was lucky enough that the partition the VHD files lived on was intact. What really bothers me is the fact that you can’t simply import the virtual machine. The reason is quite silly: it was not exported. In order to get the vm back online you must use the Disk Editor and merge the files back into the root file one at a time. pretty lame microsoft.
Here is how you do it.
1) start by backing up the folder before you start
2) rename all the avhd files in the snapshot folder to vhd. (but first write down the modified date and time.
3) open the Disk editor in hyper-v manager and merge the most recent file to the parent
4) repeat this process until you have no more snapshots left.

Have an old LCD monitor around? here is a cool hack to turn it into a privacy monitor
Nov 28th
Pretty neat stuff, you can remove the polarized film from an old lcd monitor and take some old 3d glasses and the end result will be a lcd screen that cannot be seen unless you have polarized glasses!

Setup a Hyper-V lab and use microsoft iSCSI target to provide storage!

I read this the other day and just wanted to give a link to my readers to checkout this great little writeup by Aidan Finn. He walked you though creating a free SAN using Windows 2008R2. I wasn’t aware they had released this code beyond windows storage server 2008. Apparently this is a free download and is based on the “Stringbean” software (Which Microsoft acquired some time ago: http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Data-Storage/Microsoft-Stakes-Out-String-Beans-iSCSI-Storage/)
Here is the writeup from Aidan:

Netflix will be available for Kindle Fire launch!
Nov 9th
According to the WashingtonPost,
Amazon is announcing today that Netflix and Facebook will headline a cast of “several thousand” apps and games available for the Fire at launch, all of which have been tested by the company specifically for Fire compatibility.
read the full story here: http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/9/2549230/kindle-fire-apps-netflix-facebook-and-rhapsody-all-coming-next-week
The interesting part of this story is the rumor that Amazon will try to take out Netflix by offering streaming movies. Which , if it were true would make this announcement very odd.

Use Terminal Server or Remote Desktop and need to accept connections on alternate ports?
Nov 3rd
I get asked this question alot and this is very simple. you can change the port by editing the registry, but what i usually do is create a separate registry entry to allow alternate ports to use to access my remote desktop. This is great for when i am on networks that block port 3389, but allow port 3390 and above. It goes without saying that if you are behind a firewall you will need additional configuration to allow access.
Reason for editing the registry to add the listener on the new port is the fact that you cannot add this using the GUI.
This document contains instructions for editing the registry. If you make any error while editing the registry, you can potentially cause Windows to fail or be unable to boot, requiring you to reinstall Windows. Edit the registry at your own risk. Always back up the registry before making any changes. If you do not feel comfortable editing the registry, do not attempt these instructions. Instead, seek the help of a trained computer specialist.
In the mood for something different for breakfast and happen to be near Redlands or San Bernardino?
Nov 2nd
Recently a new restraunt opened near my office and i decided to check it out. Pinoy’s Best House of Silog N’ ihaw-ihaw replaced Aurora’s Coffee, which had Coffee, Tea and Filipino Food. The new restraunt has a much larger selection of food, including Lunch time food such as Adobo, Pork BBQ, Fish and Soup dishes. But more importantly to me serves breakfast all day long. One of my favorite things to eat from Aurora’s was the LongSilog, which, if you are unfamiliar with Filipino breakfast is a serving of rice (in this case garlic rice) longanisa (sweet garlic sausage, chicken or pork) Fried Eggs and some garnish. I haven’t had a chance to eat there yet, although i am hoping to next week, they remodeled the interior and this has improved seating within the restaurant. Apparently they have been open for 3 weeks.
Pinoy’s Best House of Silog N’ ihaw-ihaw is located at 25685 Redlands Blvd. Suite B Loma Linda Ca 92354
They are on the corner of Mountain View and Redlands Blvd next door to A-Dong, a Vietnamese Restaurant that is also pretty good.
I will post a followup after i get a chance to try out the Silog…
